Cubs Summer Camp 2023

Date: 25th Jul 2023 Author: Bradley Howard

Cubs Summer Camp is up and running!

We started with making water bottle lanyards for the new bottles followed by a neon themed Friday Night meal!

Sunday was relentless from the leaders point of view and yesterday was definitely a “too tired to do anything but my paid job” day so this is the first chance I’ve had for the final Cubs Summer Camp 2023 post.

After (a late) lunch on Sunday we finished striking the tents, had some photos in our Cubs designed and built temporary shelters (before taking them down) and then split the Cubs into three groups to do saw and axe training and a “Sisal Trail” following the (thick) string around a route through the bushes and trees (and is way more fun than I make it sound here). There was still some free time to listen to some music and do a bit of dancing.

Small groups of 4 or 5, the Cubs then cooked their own supper of burgers and sausages on small barbeques. I had the pleasure of being offered one cooked by a group of them and can say they were absolutely delicious (and with no after effects to report!!!)
Then it was time for a “Cubs camp first” with parents invited to join us for a campfire which included our more traditional closing ceremony.

To say Michael was in his element would be an understatement – our very own “Greatest Showman” led us (with help from a few friends) through some of the usual fun songs, intermixed with the investiture of two new leaders, Rebecca and Libby, and presentation of Chief Scout’s Silver awards to Cameron and Raffi as well as Alice, who, along with Anna (who couldn’t stay for the ceremony), became our first girls in 11th Edgware to earn this top Cubs award.

We have an enormous amount of photos covering the last part of camp (see the whole lot on the Facebook group!). They show some great memories of a fantastic weekend and we thank you for lending us your Cubs as all the planning would have been a complete waste of time if they hadn’t showed up!!!! Plus, of course, they are all great fun to be around, to watch grow, and, with their infectious enthusiasm, take on things they’ve never done before and you’d probably not let them do if you knew beforehand!!!!

Have a great summer and see you in September.
